August Jazz Tryouts
Tryouts for the Garfield Jazz Ensemble take place in the band room at Garfield High School located at 400 23rd Ave in Seattle. Students should enter through the Alder St (southeast) entrance.
New students (those who have never played in a Garfield jazz band) may select one of the dates below to audition. Just show up with your instrument and sign in. Drums, amps, and piano will be provided. It is also advised that not everyone wait until the Tuesday to audition if at all possible. If that is the only day you can audition, then come on that day. We’d like to spread them out. Just select one of the following days:
Monday Aug.14 — 11 AM
Tuesday Aug. 15 — 11 AM
Returning Jazz Musician Audition Dates:
Wednesday Aug. 16 — 11 AM
Thursday Aug. 17 — 11 AM
Friday Aug. 18 — 11 AM
What to expect. You will be required to:
- Play one or two of the 12 major scales
- Sight-read music in different styles
You may also:
- Prepare a piece of your choice to play (this is not mandatory)
- Improvise (this is not mandatory)
Drummers will be required to:
- Play Swing and Latin styles at varied tempos
- Sight-read
