What a night! Thank you all for a celebration of Garfield at our Purple Rain Party Celebration. It was a fun and entertaining night filled with enthusiastic supporters.
Thanks to the student musicians for their great performances. From a quartet of cellos to two amazing jazz ensembles and singers, to the always-rousing drumline, our GHS students bring it! Thank you to the students and their teachers/directors.
We enjoyed Mr. Meade Johnson and Mr. Mark Lovre, science and English teachers respectively, who spoke to the value of PTSA funding. Mr. Meade has an AmeriCorps volunteer in his class, and he extolled the benefits of his teacher’s aide. The AmeriCorps volunteers work full time, and their hours extend after dismissal time, so they are available to provide after-school tutoring. Mr. Lovre noted additional areas of funding requested by teachers: stipends, grants to classrooms for additional programming (such as the Shakespeare troupe that performs in all his classes) and club funding. In total, the PTSA funding adds up to make a big impact. Thank you to Mr. Meade and Mr. Lovre for sharing your stories!
The video produced by Mr. Louvier’s class (and edited by Matt and Wendy Skerritt) showed us the magic of Garfield High School. With the choir singing “Purple Rain,” led by an amazing young GHS student, the video features beautiful short portraits of the students, mixed in with shots of school spirit, and moments of student activism such as the MLK March. The video showed off the energy and heart of our wonderful students at GHS.
Chef John Platt along his son Wilson, and Chef in the Hat, Thierry Rautureau, shared their own experiences and their kids’ experiences at Garfield. They motivated the crowd, and you showed your spirit, and raised the paddle in a big BULLDOG way.
We want to thank ALL of our volunteers. Thank you to our amazing parent party hosts, dessert dash bakers, wine wall donors and golden ticket buyers. Thank you to all the bidders and paddle raisers. Thanks to everyone who bid on the live items. It was a team effort all the way!
Together we raised approximately $160,000 (before expenses). It was a tremendous outpouring of pride and generosity!
