Incoming 9th Grade Music Registration & Auditions

If you have an incoming 9th grade student and have general registration questions, please refer to the Registration Guide and Course Description link as well as the Registration Materials, and FAQ’s listed on the Garfield Website under Counseling https://garfieldhs.seattleschools.org/services/school_counseling, these items can answers many of your questions.

With respect to music classes: Students should select any of the music classes listed online or on the paper form and they should also plan to attend the auditions as outlined below. Regardless of which band they selected during the registration process, their schedule will be updated to the appropriate ensemble based on the results of the audition. Similarly, Jazz Auditions will happen in August (check the Garfield website regularly for the most up-to-date information https://garfieldhs.seattleschools.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=7367&pageId=79868969), and may also affect schedules once those auditions have taken place.

Garfield Symphony & Chamber Orchestras Auditions for Symphony Orchestra for winds, brass, harp, piano & percussion will be May 20 – 21 from 3:45 PM until everyone has auditioned. First come, first served. Room 219. Audition requirements are posted at http://garfieldorchestra.org/

All 9th Grade strings sign up for Chamber Orchestra. No audition required. For more information: http://garfieldorchestra.org/

Garfield Concert & Symphonic Bands Brass & Woodwinds Auditions will be May 28 – MAY 29 from 3:45 PM until everyone has auditioned. Room 217. Five-minute individual slots. First come, first served. Students will demonstrate one minute of prepared material, scales and sight reading.

Garfield Drumline Auditions for Advanced Varsity Drumline will be May 28 – May 29 from 3:45 PM until everyone has auditioned. Room 217. Five-minute individual slots. First come, first served. Students will demonstrate one minute of prepared material on either snare, tenor, bass or cymbal, and a small amount of sight reading.

A student can select any of the Band or Orchestra offerings during the registration process. Garfield Counseling and Music Department will work out the details of their schedule after the audition to ensure that they are then enrolled in the correct course based on their ability level.
