Community Health Professions Academy (CHPA) is a program aimed at students between the ages of 13 and 18, in which dental students, faculty, AmeriCorps members along with pre-health students volunteer their time to provide career guidance and enrichment for underrepresented high school students in Washington State. Known in the past under the names of Dental Camp and Dental Academy, CHPA was initially developed in 2013. The 2017 Dental Academy cohort, a group of seventeen high school students who completed the program in the spring, were provided the opportunity to interact with local dentists and physicians, who shared the stories of their journeys to their professions. The scholars also participated in hands-on activities that broadened their perspective of the medical and dental field. The scholars, with mentorship from their dental student mentors, presented a culminating digital story telling project in front of family and friends for their final session. Topics chosen ranged from personal stories to relevant health educational issues in their communities.
Community Health Professions Academy is held over seven Saturdays sessions through the months of January to May.
