Garfield Chess: Epic battles & more at Championship
Congratulations to Garfield Senior Edward Cheng, who went undefeated at the State High School Chess Championship Feb. 28-March 1 at Lincoln Hill High School in Stanwood.
Edward held State Champion Lakeside’s top player, a Master, to a draw after an epic battle lasting well over 200 moves, reports Jeff Nomura, Garfield teacher and Chess Club Advisor. Edward was named as a State All-Star for his undefeated performance.
The Garfield chess team did not fare as well, placing 16th out of 48 teams. This marks the first time in the past 26 years that the team did not place in the top ten at State, Nomura noted. Garfield was in the top ten until the last round of matches, when a disappointing performance sent them tumbling down the standings.
- Chess Club meets Tuesdays after school in Room 320, and will be holding exciting in-school tournaments before the end of the school year!
