Fall Sports Update

The uncertainty surrounding school sports is frustrating for everyone.  Please visit the Garfield High School website under “Student Life” to learn information about Garfield’s Athletics, and check back regularly for updates about all athletic information (e.g. registration, season start dates, team information, etc.).  Updates will also be sent out through the Garfield App.

Athletic registration for all sports for the 2020-2021 school year is now open.  Carole Lynch, Garfield’s Athletic Director, advises students to complete their athletic registration early EXCEPT paying the ASB fee.  The ASB fee is non-refundable, so hold off paying it until practices are cleared to begin.  Students must have completed their athletic registration to be eligible to participate in the first practice.

Garfield is a member of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) which has modified the 2020-21 sports season calendar due to COVID-19.  The changes created four WIAA-sanctioned seasons and moved moderate- and high-risk team sports, originally scheduled for the fall season, to the WIAA Season 3.

The WIAA Executive Board and planning committees are working under the Return-To-Activity Guidelines supported and co-authored by the National Federation of High Schools, Washington Department of Health and the Governor’s Office, as well as sport-specific guidelines set forth by WIAA committees made up of coaches, athletic directors, students, officials and local health professionals. Those sports-specific guidelines can be found on the WIAA Website.  For a tentative WIAA season calendar, click here

WIAA Executive Director Mick Hoffman speaks to students in Washington about the process and plan to resume to athletics and activities safely in this short video message:
