Basketball teams finish 3rd, 5th in state 3A tourney

Congratulations to the Garfield boys and girls basketball teams on deep runs in the 2025 State 3A Basketball Tournaments.

The boys finished 3rd after beating No. 2 seed Mt. Spokane in a March 8 consolation game. In a semifinal a day earlier, the Bulldogs lost to No. 1 seed Rainier Beach. (Beach won the State Championship, and had taken the District 2 and Metro League championships.)

The girls were seeking a fifth consecutive state 3A title, but finished fifth. Eventual champion Central Valley squeaked past a valiant Garfield squad by 2 points in a semifinal on March 7. The Bulldogs had put together a remarkable streak, coming into the tournament as the No. 19 seed, but beat seeds No. 3, 4, 11 and 14 until being stopped by the top-ranked Central.
