Meet Jacob Zimmerman! GHS Jazz Band 3 Teacher

Jacob Zimmerman attended high school here at Garfield, and studied with our own Clarence Acox. He graduated in 2004, and went on to the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he earned a degree in Jazz Performance.

Mr. Zimmerman began teaching at Garfield in 2013. (Mr. Acox teaches both Jazz Band 1 and 2.) Jazz Band 3 rehearses after school, and Mr. Zimmerman also directs student jazz jams at the Royal Room in Columbia City once a month.

When he’s not teaching freshman jazz students, Mr. Zimmerman is a freelance musician specializing in alto and tenor sax, as well as clarinet. He has regular gigs at Eastside Stomp in Redmond and Century Ballroom on Capitol Hill, where he plays at swing dances. If you like to dance, come on out! Mr. Zimmerman also performs with a jazz trio every first Thursday at Egan’s Jazz Club in Ballard, and every Wednesday night at the Pink Door.

In his spare time, Mr. Zimmerman loves to watch the Mariners, and he enjoys film noir. (In fact, he’ll be performing at the opening night of SIFF’s Noir City Seattle festival this Thursday, Feb. 16. The festival runs through Feb. 22.)

His advice for budding jazz musicians? Listen to jazz music as much as you can, and make sure you see live performances. – Thanks to Kris Morada for this story
