UNCF Porfolio Project: College & Scholarship Application Assistance

UNCF in partnership with College Access Now in Seattle will host the 13th annual UNCF Portfolio Project. The Portfolio Project was developed to assist 11th and 12th grade students through the college and scholarship application process. The mission of the Portfolio Project is to increase the number of minority and low-income college and scholarship applicants from the states of Oregon and Washington. Ultimately, the program strives to ensure these students create a portfolio that will support their efforts in getting accepted into college and receiving the necessary financial assistance to become successful college graduates.

Volunteer mentors provide the support necessary to ensure that data is compiled and deadlines are managed so that the students can package their qualifications into a portfolio for successful review. During the program students learn the college entrance requirements of various educational institutions, compile the necessary data to complete college applications, scholarship applications and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students also receive SAT/ACT prep resources from the Princeton Review, access scholarship application resources and learn vital social skills to help them navigate through college beyond their academic courses. In addition, mentors and guest speakers offer guidance on writing college essays and help students identify and categorize their service and leadership activities for application inclusion.

Since 2006, approximately 548 students and 166 mentors have participated in the Portfolio Project. The mentorship and guidance that has been provided from this program has not only produced 82% student completion rate, but also 70% of the participants have received scholarship support. Moreover, 16% of those students attended an HBCU and 52% attended a Washington State institution.

The online application is currently open for students and mentors and the deadline for applications is July 27, 2018. If you are interested in learning more about the program, please see the links below:
