Principal’s Message – Getting Ready for Day One

Principal Shareef sent the following email to families on Saturday morning, April 17th.

From the Desk of Ms. Chow:

All students and families can view their cohort assignment on their schedule on the Source.

One week ago, cohort assignments were mass-enrolled by District based on the student’s address. Addresses ending with an ODD number were COHORT A. Addresses ending with an EVEN number were COHORT B. This was to keep siblings in the  cohort.

District then allowed families another week to change their REMOTE/IN-PERSON status. After one week, Garfield had an additional 60 requests to return to HYBRID IN-PERSON learning. Ms. Shareef also reviewed and approved many cohort assignment changes.

Once all the changes were entered (today), cohorts were balanced to fit the room capacity, and student cohort assignments were added to student schedules.

Please understand the most important goal for cohort balancing is ensuring all returning students can be seated safely in the classroom. Because many of our faculty have been teaching 37-39 students all year (not including PE, Theatre and Music), it was difficult to fit all of the returning students. We had to review and move 80 students to balance cohorts and prevent classes from going over the room capacity.

There will be a handful who are not happy with the cohort assignments.  Know we are all doing our best under the circumstances.

Good luck on Monday. Only 8 weeks to go.

We have 977 students who have chosen HYBRID/IN-PERSON learning.

Cohort A is M/T.

Cohort B is Th/F.

Cohort C is REMOTE.

We have 763 students who have chosen REMOTE learning. It is likely 263 of these students are Running Start.

We will have over 500 + people in the building each day.  It is so important that we follow procedures in order to keep us all safe!

Bell Schedule

I’ve attached a copy of the bell schedule for our Final Eight weeks. (see below)

Start of School Forms

If you have chosen in-person learning, there are forms that need to be filled out and returned to school.

Please follow the link for the documents we need to have turning in by the end of the month.  If you can print them out that would be great.  If not, don’t worry, we will be sending the forms home with your student: Click Here for School Forms
