Garfield Chess Team Wraps Up Successful Year

The Garfield Chess Team placed seventh in a field of thirty-four teams at the Washington High School Chess Association’s 2023 State Team Championship in March. Representing Garfield were Edward Cheng, Henry Adams, Graham Cobden, Logan Teh, Soren Farny, Jason Huang, Finn Albright, Edison Yu, Will Nielsen, and Reece Cole.

Garfield Chess recently held two chess tournaments at Garfield: April Insanity and the Garfield Speed Chess Championship (won by Garfield’s own Edward Cheng ’25)! Garfield will host the Garfield Chess Championship later this month; the event is open to all Garfield students.

Students interested in joining the chess team can contact Mr. Jeffrey Nomura at jtnomura@seattleschools.org.  Garfield’s Chess Club meets in Room 320 on Tuesdays after school and chess also happens every day during first lunch and Wednesday lunch (when we have the common lunch).

Mr. Nomura reports that there has been a recent surge in interest in chess among Garfield students, and many new players have been recruited for next year’s team. We are excited for the 2023-2024 season!

Garfield PTSA is pleased to support the Chess Club by covering the cost of tournament fees.
