GHS Chess Team Places Third at State!

The Garfield Chess Team placed third at the fifty-fifth annual Washington State High School Chess Championship, held as an online tournament last weekend, co-sponsored by the Washington High School Chess Association (WHSCA) and the Washington Chess Federation (WCF). The sixth-seeded Bulldogs went undefeated for the first four rounds, and finally fell to repeating champion Interlake in a hard-fought last-round match. This marks the twenty-second consecutive year that the Garfield Chess team has placed among the top ten teams at State. In that timespan, Garfield has won the state title twice, finished second four times, and placed third five times.

Representing Garfield at State were Jr. George King, So. Graham Cobden, Jr. Andrew Nakamoto, Jr. Ronan Fiat, and So. Henry Adams. Special recognition was given to Ronan and Henry for their outstanding performances on their respective boards. With the entire first team returning next year, the chess team has a bright future ahead! Go Bulldogs!
