Important Work Session on Advanced Learning – Wed 9/25/19

Seattle Public Schools (SPS) is holding a Work Session Wednesday, September 25th, at 4:30 PM, at the John Stanford Center Auditorium, at which the Board will describe sweeping changes to Advanced Learning that will impact every student in the District, K-12, for years to come. We need a strong GHS Community presence at this meeting, to include members of our Middle and Elementary feeder schools, in support of maintaining advanced learning opportunities at Garfield.

Currently, SPS offers differentiated learning to students who qualify and, at the high school level, advanced courses to any student wanting to take them.  The availability of advanced courses in the high schools is wholly dependent upon having a sufficiently large number of students registered to take them.  The proposal being put forth by SPS ends differentiated learning and emphasizes uniformity and standardization across the District.  As a result, the current proposal by SPS could have far-reaching impacts up to and including the elimination of Advanced Learning/AP courses at Garfield and other Seattle schools.

As the Garfield PTSA, we want to ensure students continue to have the opportunity to challenge themselves in advanced courses, and we strive to improve and increase access to advanced courses for ALL students, rather than limiting access for everyone.
