Main entry security upgrade: new vestibule

Garfield Bulldog
Garfield’s brass bulldog will still be watching visitors to the main building lobby.

Garfield is improving security by adding a “controlled entry” vestibule to the lobby of Garfield’s main building, Principal Hart has announced.

This addition, to be complete by early February, is intended to route all main building visitors through the front office for check-in before being granted access. No security alterations have been announced for the entries at the Gymnasium and Quincy Jones Performance Center.

The main building vestibule will include a glass wall and secure doors so it is separate from the rest of the lobby. The entry process during school hours will be:

  • Visitors will be buzzed in through the exterior doors.
  • They will enter the secure vestibule and proceed to the front office for check-in.
  • Access to the rest of the main building will only be granted after visitors complete the check-in process.

“This system is designed to strengthen school security by requiring all visitors to check in before entering the building,” Principal Hart said in a Jan. 29, 2025, email to families. “The locked vestibule doors will prevent unauthorized access while maintaining a clear and efficient check-in process.”

Garfield is also asking the District to improve camera surveillance and limit access to side doors to enhance security.
