Principal Tarance Hart announced a slightly updated cellphone policy on Jan. 29, 2025. The original 2024-25 policy had been issued in an email on Sept. 2.
“Our cellphone policy has positively impacted classroom engagement, reducing distractions and improving student focus,” Dr. Hart said. “Based on this teacher feedback, we will continue enforcing this policy throughout the second semester.”
Garfield Cellphone Policy
- No Cellphones in Class: Students may not use cellphones, earbuds, or headphones during class unless explicitly permitted by the teacher for educational purposes. This policy maintains a learning-focused environment where students can fully engage in lessons.
- Storing Phones: Upon entering the classroom, students must silence their phones and place them in the “Cellphone Airbnb” storage provided in each classroom.
- Appropriate Cellphone Use: Students may use their phones during passing periods and lunch in a non-disruptive manner. Phones must remain silent throughout the school day.
- Shelter-in-Place or Lockdown Situations: In emergencies, students will have access to their phones to communicate with family and stay informed. Safety remains our top priority.
- Consequences: If a phone is visible, rings, or is used without permission during class, staff will enforce our cellphone policy with progressive discipline. Continued violations will result in additional consequences. We aim to support students in responsible behavior while maintaining a productive learning environment.
- No Unauthorized Recording: Students may not photograph or record others without consent to protect privacy.
