Reclaiming the Village is to become an annual gathering focused on strengthening partnerships between the school, Black families, and community partners who support them. “The goal is to deepen trust, strengthen collaboration, and work together to improve how we serve and support Black students at Garfield,” according to the school’s announcement, which continues below.

“We are hosting this summit because the data is clear. Black students continue to face disproportionate barriers in access, achievement, and connection to school. At the same time, we see the brilliance, resilience, and leadership that Black students bring into our classrooms and community every day. This summit is a step toward building a more consistent and collaborative structure — one rooted in shared ownership, mutual respect, and collective action.

“This is not a stand-alone event. It marks the beginning of a longer-term commitment to collaboration, shared responsibility, and aligned action on behalf of Black students at Garfield. It also reflects our commitment to building more sustained and intentional family engagement, grounded in trust, partnership, and a shared vision for student success.”
