PTSA Statement on Teacher Sit-in at Garfield on 9/28/18

Dear Garfield Families,

As a school community, we have recently learned from the administration that two teacher positions have been eliminated, specifically in Health and PE. These cuts are a result of Garfield’s enrollment being down approximately 87 students, which in turn reduces Garfield’s budget.

In response to these cuts, our teachers held a brief unannounced sit-in today in the gym. The school administration has been fielding many calls from the parent community while trying to manage the situation in the best interest of students.

As a PTSA, we contacted the Superintendent’s office for support of our teachers, students and administration to help resolve these issues in a manner with the best outcome. Certified staff were dispatched to the school but classes resumed by the time they arrived.

We understand how difficult these situations are for our community. However, we strive to work together toward a solution that benefits our students, teachers, staff and administration alike.
