Meet Mr. Tyson Manzin, Our School Librarian

April was School Library Month, a celebration of school librarians and school libraries. We are belatedly recognizing and honoring our school librarian, Mr. Tyson Manzin!

Mr. Manzin has been a librarian for eight years, six of them at Garfield. He was strongly influenced in his career choice by his mother, who was a librarian for 35 years. But his love for libraries was cemented in college, when dorm life was too much; he was able to find a quiet corner in the library and make it his.

Mr. Manzin takes great pleasure in the fact that Garfield’s library is a central hub of the school. It offers comfortable seating, a warm atmosphere, and all of the resources students might need during the school day. Mr. Manzin tries to be an adult that students can talk to and ask for help and support, without judgment. 

In addition to his role as school librarian, Mr. Manzin coaches the boys and girls JV soccer teams. He is also the school’s educational technology specialist, helping teachers with the various platforms they use in their classrooms. In his spare time, Mr. Manzin tackles remodeling projects and spends time outdoors kayaking, hiking, and camping. He can also be found on the pitch with his over-40s soccer league!

Mr. Manzin reads mostly nonfiction. The book that has affected him most is The Secret Life of Plants (by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird), for the way it uses scientific methods to reveal the hidden relationships between all living organisms.
