Congratulations GHS Chess Team Wins State High School Team Championship!

Congratulations to the Garfield Chess Team who made history by winning the 52nd annual State High School Team Chess Championship, held last Friday (3/2) and Saturday (3/3) at Interlake High School!

Garfield was joined at the top by Newport, Lakeside, Interlake, and Bellevue High Schools who finished in an unprecedented five-way tie for the title! This is the seventh state chess title in Garfield’s history, and its first since 2008. The Garfield chess team was led by reigning Supernationals Champion Jr. Roland F., and teammates Fr. Andreas F., Sr. Carl D. Sr. Zuberi W., Sr. Bashir A.-F., So. Jan B., Jr. Paulos R., Sr. Benjamin L., Jr. Nick Z., Jr. Robert S., and Jr. Cedric H. who defeated top-seeded Newport 3-2 in a hard-fought and thrilling last round match!

The chess team is now planning to represent Washington in the National High School Championship to be held April 27-29 in Columbus, Ohio. Way to go Bulldogs!
