Garfield’s new lunchroom manager Rachel Kayne is originally from North Carolina, but came to Seattle to help a friend and never left. She has 25 years of experience in the restaurant and kitchen industry as a line cook and with SPS. Before Garfield, she worked to bring garden-grown, organic, fresh, and loca food to Nova HS, and was part of the district’s nutrition task force.
Her mission is to bring her individual cuilinary flair to standard ingredients using original spices and flavors. She has gotten suggestions from the kids on what they like and envisions a build-your-own-sandwich bar that lets them customize what they eat. She’d like each Seattle school to have the freedom to cater to the distinctive tastes of their kids.
