Teen Health Center Offers Group Discussions

The Garfield Teen Health Center is offering discussion groups for students. They are open to any Garfield student!

 

The Art of Body Acceptance

Facilitated by Nikita Nerkar from the Teen Health Center and Kiyana Higa from the Counseling Office, the Art of Body Acceptance is an 8-week group that will use various forms of art to build body acceptance and self-worth. Open to all genders.

Racial Stress and Coping Skills

Dr. Richelle and Dr. China

Join Drs. China and Richelle from the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic for a weekly group focused on dealing with microagressions, learning about the impacts of discrimination on mental health, and building skills to notice and respond to negative emotions. [Update: Still available for signup – has not started as of Jan. 29.]

 


DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) Skills Group

Drs. China and Richelle from the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic will facilitate this weekly group using DBT, a type of therapy that focuses on building skills to navigate difficult situations and emotions. DBT uses mindfulness, stress management and emotional regulation strategies. [Update: Still available for signup – has not started as of Jan. 29.]

 


Drop-in Coping Skills Group

Join Nikita Nerkar, therapist at the Teen Health Center, for an 8-week drop-in Coping Skills group. This group focuses on learning ways to handle difficult situations, building skills to help with relaxation, and developing healthy coping strategies. Drop-in style means students do not have to attend every week — just whichever weeks they are available.


 

 

  • Teen Health Center staff will follow up to help get students registered. Groups will begin meeting in January 2024 or when enough students have expressed interest.

The Teen Health Center is run by the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic division of Seattle Children’s.
