Legislature 2024: Options to Advocate for Education
Improve financial education
House Bill 1915 would make financial education instruction a high school graduation prerequisite (starting with the Class of 2031) and a required component of public education. It’s easy to contact your legislators with thoughts on this proposal.
Taking action on bills affecting education
Both the Washington State PTA and the Seattle Council PTSA track bills affecting education and suggest action steps for parents/guardians and students. You CAN make a difference!
- SCPTSA bill tracker (info that also lists Saturday virtual office hours when you can ask questions)
- SCPTSA Facebook page (includes calls to action on specific bills)
- WSPTA weekly legislative update (info provided by the WSPTA legislative consultant)
- WSPTA action alerts page (includes email templates for contacting legislators and an e-list signup)
Students can apply for Legislative Youth Advisory Council
On Jan. 15, Garfield PTSA’s Advocacy Committee co-chairs attended the Washington State PTA “Focus Day” in Olympia. One of the highlights was hearing from Washington Legislative Youth Advisory Council members, who serve as an official lobbying voice for youth in our state. If your student is interested in government, policy or lobbying, applications for a 2-year position on the council are due April 30, 2024.
